Tomato Tavve

Too busy to go shop for vegetables? All you are left with is a bag of tomatoes? not to worry, this easy to cook and yummy recipe comes handy. A typical Karnataka Dal recipe which can be served with any kind of Roti or Rice.

  1. Togiri Bele (Toor Dal) – 1 Cup
  2. Tomato – 2 medium sized
  3. Tamrind pulp – 2 Table spoon
  4. Red Chilli Powder – 2 Table Spoon
  5. Turmeric Powder – 1/2 Table spoon
  6. Cooking oil – 2 Table spoon
  7. Spices for Oggarne ( Tadka)
  8. Asafoetida (Hing) – A pinch
  9. Salt – As per taste
  10. Menthi seeds – 1 table spoon

Preparation Method:

Main Dish

Step 1 : Take dal in a bowl , clean and rinse it a couple of times.
Step 2 : Add the rinsed dal into pressure cooker and add 2 glasses of water, sliced tomatoes, methi seeds and turmeric to it.
Step 3 : Pressure cook it for 2 – 3 whistles for approximately 10 – 15 minutes (Until it gets a paste-like consistency)
Step 4: Now take the mixture in a heating pan, add red chilli powder, salt and tamrind pulp.
Step 5: Take a spoon and lightly mash the dal mixture and cook it until it becomes a soft paste.


In a small pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and let mustard seeds crackle. Then add 2 red chillis, Hing and Tadka is Ready! Pour it on Tomato Dal and Serve Hot!

Serving Tips: Serve with ghee and hot rice. If rice is cold and you are too bored to heat it, serve this with a spoon of ground nut oil for a completely different taste!!
